Oral Cancer Screening

This year alone, 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral and throat cancer. Early detection of oral cancer can make a lasting impact on your life. When it is caught early, the chances of being able to cure it are significantly better. That’s exactly why oral cancer screenings at least once a year are essential.

What Does an Oral Cancer Screening Consist of?

Your oral cancer screening consists of an examination performed by your dentist to search for signs of cancer or precancerous cells in your mouth. It is made up of a visual check of your mouth and palpation of your jaw and neck, as well as a discussion on your family history.

Even though an oral cancer screening is a great way to spot early detection, it’s important to be aware of the following signs and symptoms in between dental visits.

The symptoms of oral cancer can include:

  • Red or white patches
  • A sore throat or irritation that doesn’t go away
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
  • Pain or numbness in your mouth or lips
  • A lump, crust, rough spot, thickening, or small eroded area
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when your shut your mouth

We Offer Velscope Technology

VELscope® Vx technology is changing the way oral mucosal examinations take place. The VELscope® Vx handheld device emits a harmless, bright blue light which is used to inspect the mouth and tongue. The device is sensitive to abnormal tissue changes and the distinctive blue-spectrum light causes the soft tissue (oral mucosa) of the mouth to naturally fluoresce.
